Last time, I posted a step 1 in finding your passion. Taking this further now, into step 2 & 3, you’ll need to go deeper for some inspiration. In finding your passion, it’s important to look within yourself and focus on what it is you truly enjoy doing. What excites you? It may be something at work.. a part of your job that gets you excited perhaps. It could be something you do outside of work like a hobby, a side job, something you do as a volunteer or a parent or a spouse or a friend. It could be something you haven’t done in awhile. Again, think about this for 30 minutes, or 15 at the least. If you don’t, you’re probably shortchanging yourself. Think about this as your step 2 and record your findings.

For step 3 in finding your passion, think about something you’ve secretly dreamed of. You might have some ridiculous dream job you’ve always wanted to do. Have you ever had a dream of being a novelist, an artist, a designer, an architect, a doctor, an entrepreneur, a programmer. Maybe some fear or self-doubt has held you back and led you to dismiss this idea. List your dream ideas, no matter how unrealistic.

I know this is sometimes easier said that done. I am one of the lucky ones as I am doing what I love to do. Are you? You’ve heard the saying.. “Life is short”. Well it’s also a lot more fulfilling when you are living it with passion.

So, how do you go about finding your passion? Sometimes a skill or talent will push themselves forward at a young age.. how lucky is that, right? Sometimes a little more personal investigating is in order. Think about it.. unless you’re reading this while you’re still really young, you most likely have some skills or talents and shown some kind of aptitude. Are you a good speaker, writer, sketcher, organizer, builder, planner, teacher, friend? Maybe you have you been great at unique ideas, connecting people, gardening, selling?

Truly take your time and give it some thought. Think back, maybe way back to childhood even, to hobbies, to first jobs, projects you enjoyed. Within this personal investigation could be your passion.. or passions even. You’re on your way!

The greatest change happens because of people that are deeply passionate, and have a great love for the work they do.

If you want to make a difference in the world, the single most important thing you can do is consciously and deliberately choose to do work that you are passionate about.

No other choice can have a greater impact on the planet, or your life.

If you’re doing work that’s boring, you probably won’t make much of an impact. You might provide people with some amount of value. Enough to pay your rent, enough to get by. But you won’t be inciting change. And you certainly won’t be inspiring others.

If you’re doing boring work, chances are you do just enough to not get fired.

But if you do work that excites you, keeps you up at night, and fulfills you… you’ll do more. You’ll give yourself to it completely. You’ll put in extra time, more energy, more passion. Because it’s worth it. It’s satisfying.

At the end of the day you’ll think: “My time was well spent today.”

So the real question isn’t whether or not to do boring or passionate work. The question is how to get started.

Five things you can do to move toward getting paid to do what you love:

1. Find your passion. This is all about your great love, and what makes you come alive. To get started here, ask: “What am I insanely interested in?” “What could I talk about for hours?” and “What would I do for free?”

2. Find your strengths. What we’re looking for are things you’re naturally good at, and the unique strengths you’ve had since birth. This is about contributing your gifts to the world. To get started, interview your friends, family, or peers and ask them what three things you’re naturally talented at.

3. Find your value. Finding the intersection between what you’re good at and what people are willing to pay you for is what it all boils down to. If you can’t find a way to get paid to do what you love, the other stuff doesn’t really matter. So it’s worth spending some time figuring this out. To get started, think about the benefits you’ll give others by contributing your value. Think about whether or not there is a desperate pain or a deep passion involved in what you’re offering.

4. Make the commitment. I think, more than any other reason, people fail to succeed is because they fail to commit. Thinking “I don’t know” or “maybe someday” will not get you to the point of doing what you’re passionate about for a living. It takes an uncompromising commitment to make this change for yourself. Instead of thinking “I don’t know,” think “I’ll figure it out.” Remember, paths are made by walking.

5. Be willing to let go. As much as you might want to make this change for yourself, it can be hard to let go of the old patterns of thinking and behaving. A lot of us have ideas that “work shouldn’t be fun” or “you should just suck it up.” Breaking down those beliefs can be difficult, but moving toward a new direction is most definitely worth it.

6. What will you give up? You might not think that you have time to take on a new endeavor, and you’re right. You won’t have time until you make the time. There are a lot of things we place in our schedules that we think we must do. But in reality, our world wouldn’t collapse if we chose something else. Make a list of all the activities and time sinks that you’ll give up in order to make time for your new journey.

7. Will you say Yes to yourself? You may want to become a writer, dentist, life coach, painter, or public speaker. If you know that this is what you’re meant to do, then give yourself permission to call yourself that… even if you’re not established yet. And even if you don’t make a full time income from it. Own your passion, completely and unreservedly.

While there is more to your journey than just these seven things, this is a huge start. Clarity and commitment are the biggest steps, the rest is easy. One foot in front of the other.

You will get there. No one can stop you if you want it enough.

And remember, the world needs you to do what you love. Nothing else can create more change, or have a greater impact.

Give yourself permission. We need your gifts.

This message to us about Ovarian Cancer is spoken from the beautiful heart and soul of my friend Debbie, who lives with passion every day.

Sometimes I wonder what God’s real purpose was when He created me?

A college teacher, once described me as having a real aptitude for helping others, a ‘born advocate’, something that I never really grasped until the death of my mother.

The months which led towards my 40th birthday, were filled with a lot of emotional-suffering, and the catalyst for a new and scary journey-

Both parents had retired to the seaside of N.S.W’S lovely Central Coast, these years meant to be their new beginning-a chance to relax and spend more time together, including time to do what mum loved most…travel!

It was the year 2000, Sydney’s first turn at hosting the Olympic Games and the year that my parents had booked their trip to Europe.

Six weeks holiday, seeing sights some only dream about, first stop Heathrow airport, and on ‘touch-down’ Mum would celebrate her 63rd birthday. We had laughed & joked as she shared the planned Beatles Bus-Tour, I was seriously jealous but as thrilled & enthusiastic with her.

When March arrived, no one could have prepared for the news mum would receive, mum’s diagnosis & the urgency for immediate surgery had us all in a real spin! Symptoms which mum’s doctors had recently dismissed, had suddenly resulted in something much more sinister, something neither myself, nor those closest had ever heard of?

This awful disease had made itself known all too late-why?

Ovarian cancer, stage 111, a slow growing tumor which had attached itself to one of mum’s ovaries, the reason for all her symptoms:

        *Bloated tummy

        *Lower back pain

        *Slight nausea

The ‘above’ very common symptoms, simply vague signs that any one person can so often identify with now & then.

The trip canceled, and the six week dream of travel replaced by six weeks within hospital confinement. Mum’s birthday came & went, no obvious celebrations, a frightening ordeal where mum had been forced to face her own mortality.

Her surgery over but not the outcome we had all prayed for, mum was left weak while her body continued to fill up with fluid. The latter required regular physio-treatment as it had impaired mum’s mobility, inevitably reducing my mother to a walking-frame….mum had just turned 63!

We would learn later, how this fluid-build up played a huge role in other post-op problems, including the unknown ‘blood-clot’ which was now forming inside.

It was the first week of June, 2000, and mum was finally discharged.

I cannot write all what I had hoped to say here, it’s still too painful, and I’m still dealing with the anger….had there been just some proper test….maybe mum would still be here?

When we talk about Breast cancer, we immediately acknowledge the Mammogram, the message has always been a clear one, “Have your breasts checked”….But what of Ovarian cancer, what do we need to do here? My sister and I knew absolutely nothing!

Don’t be confused like so many others who still think a Pap smear will cover you, that’s a huge misconception! The Pap is only for the cervix, and thanks to researchers, there’s also the bonus of the recently designed vaccination, a great step forward.

So, here I am, now eight years older, and still doing anything I possibly can, to continue preaching this message to others.

My path in life took its new direction, encouraged to find a publisher, my 1st book of poems became my tribute to my mother, and a message was released!

From there, I enlisted my services as a volunteer, becoming an ‘awareness’ coordinator for OvCa Australia-National Ovarian Cancer Network, holding various events/functions, opening more doors which led to other networks.

I quickly realized I needed more, like a thirst that was unable to be quenched, I went in search for further ideas, enrolling in Tafe I began my study in Community Services-Welfare. Here I found a deeper understanding for humanity,& the urgency to become more actively involved within the community at large-

Studying also required hours of research, much of this spent ‘online’ where I was soon shifting pieces of gained knowledge, with that of websites & Blogs.

    * On floats, the flag should be displayed on a staff.

Decorative uses of the American Flag.
* The flag should never be used as clothing, bedding, or drapery. Red, white, and blue bunting may be used as decoration instead, with the blue on top, white in the middle, and red below.
* Advertising banners should not be hung from the same staff as a flag.
* The flag should not appear on napkins, boxes, or other disposable items, nor should it be embroidered on cushions, handkerchiefs, or similar objects.
Flag Maintenance, The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. Care should be taken not to let the flag get torn, dirty, or damaged. The flag should never have placed upon it, nor attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing.

Previous to Flag Day, June 14, 1923 there were no federal or state regulations governing display of the United States Flag. It was on this date that the National Flag Code was adopted by the National Flag Conference, which was attended by representatives of the Army and Navy, which had evolved their own procedures, and some 66 other national groups. This purpose of providing guidance based on the Army and Navy procedures relating to display and associated questions about the U.S. Flag was adopted by all organizations in attendance.
A few minor changes were made a year later during the Flag Day 1924 Conference. It was not until June 22, 1942 that Congress passed a joint resolution which was amended on December 22, 1942 to become Public Law 829; Chapter 806, 77th Congress, 2nd session. Exact rules for use and display of the flag (36 U.S.C. 173-178) as well as associated sections (36 U.S.C. 171) Conduct during Playing of the National Anthem, (36 U.S.C. 172) the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and Manner of Delivery were included.
The code is the guide for all handling and display of the Stars and Stripes. It does not impose penalties for misuse of the United States Flag. That is left to the states and to the federal government for the District of Columbia. Each state has its own flag law.
Criminal penalties for certain acts of desecration to the flag were contained in Title 18 of the United States Code prior to 1989. The Supreme Court decision in Texas v. Johnson; June 21, 1989, held the statute unconstitutional. This statute was amended when the Flag Protection Act of 1989 (Oct. 28, 1989) imposed a fine and/or up to I year in prison for knowingly mutilating, defacing, physically defiling, maintaining on the floor or trampling upon any flag of the United States. The Flag Protection Act of 1989 was struck down by the Supreme Court decision, United States vs. Eichman, decided on June 11, 1990.
While the Code empowers the President of the United States to alter, modify, repeal or prescribe additional rules regarding the Flag, no federal agency has the authority to issue ‘official’ rulings legally binding on civilians or civilian groups. Consequently, different interpretations of various provisions of the Code may continue to be made. The Flag Code may be fairly tested: ‘No disrespect should be shown to the Flag of the United States of America.’ Therefore, actions not specifically included in the Code may be deemed acceptable as long as proper respect is shown.

When to Fly the Flag: These days, displaying the flag every day is very common. It demonstrates support for our nation and our troops. For those choosing specific days to display the flag, special days have been identified for displaying the flag. Unless lit, the flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset, weather permitting, on the following special days: Flag Display Days.
